WORLD PAIRS QUARTER FINAL

England and the Czech Republic were the huge pre-meeting favourites here and they made light work of qualifying to the Semi Final stage, each of their riders hitting double figure returns.  Joining them in the next stage are Brazil for whom Marco Bellini was excellent and he received just enough support to see them over the line by a single point.

Bulgaria and Italy were both expected to push for 3rd place, or at least do well enough to take one of the highest scoring 4th spots in the next round, but both disappointed.  The Bulgarians couldn't offer any real support to Dimotrov and missed out to the better pairing of Brazil.  Italy were perhaps unlucky to have Turati fall in a vital race but he didn't show sparkling form in the rest of the meeting either and would probably have struggled against the excellent Czech pairing anyway.  Spain were the hosts for this one and battled gamely but after a good start they faded and fell 3 points short but certainly kept the home crowd happy with their efforts against some well established speedway nations.  Hungary came bottom of the pile but can feel very unlucky to have been missing Zoltan Benko through injury; Fekete scored 11 points and with a more experienced partner than his teenage team-mates here they would likely have challenged for a top 3 place.

WORLD PAIRS QUARTER FINAL

Russia are always strong in the World Pairs competition and Dvoynev and Federenko both scored double figures to lead them through to the next round.  Germany weren't particularly expected to go through and looked to be fulfilling that prediction in the early races but when they brought in reserve Felix Walter to see if he could offer more support to Sepp Manzbach it worked a treat as the unbeaten Walter helped his side to 2nd place.  The final qualifying place was taken by hosts Canada but it took a run-off against neighbours the USA before the confirmed their spot in the next round.  Doug Monaghan was key with an exclusion against Estonia making life hard for them but he was unbeaten in his other rides until a blank in their final heat; this meant a run-off was required but it was Monaghan who won out, albeit it with a slice of fortune perhaps, to send the home crowd wild.

Both USA riders surprisingly failed to reach double figures but both were solid enough to give Ricky Antunovich a chance in a run-off.  In the end Antunovich pulled up with engine problems and although he was trailing at the time his bike certainly wasn't right from the off.  A double agony came when they were pipped for a highest scoring 4th place spot in the next round too and they were surprisingly knocked out of the competition.  Ireland had Sam McCurdy in good form but couldn't give him enough support and the same was true of the Netherlands with Abe Zevenbergen as a couple of falls for Henk Knapke hit their scoring potential.  At the bottom were Estonia who battled gamely but perhaps introduced reserve Puosepp too late as he won his only ride.

WORLD PAIRS QUARTER FINAL

Denmark were clear favourites for this and made light work of qualification as both Jens Isaksen and Kenni Algreen scored 12+2 to win the meeting.  Behind them Australia had both Jason Isaacs and Rickie Keyse record double figure returns to cruise into the Semi Finals.  Norway were comfortable too with a good display from Rudi Juritzen and even when Ostenstad faded they had Ole Dalsen in reserve to come in and help claim a 5-1 maximum in their final heat.  Finland came 4th with 18 points and perhaps would have qualified automatically, but for a retirement for Ila Niemi in their final heat, but on countback the 3 bonus points they picked up meant they took a highest scoring 4th place spot and they will race in the Semi Finals.

Wales on home territory were hoping to do well but Clipstone couldn't find the consistency in support of Tommy Davey (13 points) and they fell short, finishing 5th.  At the bottom Belgium would have hoped to do better but never got going and Slovakia were always going to find this meeting tough and finished 7th.

WORLD PAIRS QUARTER FINAL

No problems for Poland in reaching the Semi Finals, both Boguslaw Kryznowek and Maciej Tercjak being paid for double figure scores.  Behind them 3 team tied on 20 points with New Zealand, led by Fillippe Chong with 12, and Sweden, Sven Svensson also scoring 12 towards his side's total, winning through in a run-off for an automatic qualifying place.  Hosts Scotland were the side to miss out in that run-off but they would surely have qualified but for a slow start from Alex Golden, who seemed to have bike problems.  Luke Treadwell was a handy reserve though as he scored 10 from 4 rides and their overall 20 points was comfortably enough to claim one of the highest scoring 4th place spots for the Semi Finals.

Slovenia had Jernej Keglovits reeling off 4 wins but his slow start and the failure to provide strong support meant they missed out, despite a solid 18 points overall return.  Croatia and Japan were always outsiders and this proved as expected with them never challenging for a qualifying place although Lesnik and Kisaka, both just 20 years old, enhanced their growing reputations with solid displays on the senior stage.
