POLISH GRAND PRIX

TIBOR NEMECEK (KING'S LYNN LIGHTNING) just needed to keep his head in this meeting to be crowned as World Champion, coming in as he did with a 13 point lead in the standings.  He started with a win but then appeared nervous and in the end the title was only confirmed when FILLIPPE CHONG (WANTAGE KINGS) finished 3rd in heat 10.  The title for Nemecek, who finished 3rd last season, caps a stunning year in which he has also lifted the European individual title and the World Pairs crown.  Chong was the defending world champion and battled throughout to retain his title but he can end satisfied that he becomes just the 6th man to finish in the world's top 2 in consecutive seasons.  Once the scored had been added up it was quickly realised that a run-off would be needed to decide 3rd overall after HAYDEN WOOD (LANARKSHIRE LIONS) and MACIEJ TERCJAK (WOLSTON WARRIORS) had tied on 74 points.  The Englishman made sure of the bronze medal, his 3rd in the world championships, with a fine ride and Tercjak narrowly missed out on a rostrum place.

The meeting itself was won by BOGUSLAW KRYZNOWEK (MILTON KEYNES CATS), ahead of Wood and Nemecek, and his 16 point haul was enough to push him up from 9th to joint 5th overall and see him guarantee a place in next season's series.  JACK HAGEN (TEESSIDE TRANSPORTERS) was the other rider in the Grand Final and his points return meant he held on to 8th overall and avoided a trip to the dreaded Grand Prix Challenge meeting.  SVEN SVENSSON (STOCKHOLM SCORPIONS) reached the Semi Finals but despite totalling 9 points he fell out of the top 8 overall and will ride in the GP Challenge, as will RICKY ANTUNOVICH (BOTTESFORD BULLETS) and GABRYS IRZYK (NEWMARKET RAIDERS) who also reached the Semis but couldn't do enough to lift themselves into the top 8.  The final rider to extend his meeting beyond the regulation 20 heats was Wild Card JACEK KLECHA (BUDAPEST BULLS) who won the recent GP Challenge Semi Final and will be wanting to return next season as a permanent rider in the series.

Of the rest of the riders in this round KENNI ALGREEN (WANTAGE KINGS) and BORIS DVOYNEV (NEWMARKET RAIDERS) didn’t have the best of rounds but had already done enough over the series to see themselves end in the top 8 and be guaranteed a crack at the title again next time around.  The others all pretty much knew they would be facing the GP Challenge meeting, where they need to finish in the top 5 to be guaranteed a place at the highest level of competition next season.
