WORLD PAIRS FINAL

The Czech Republic may have had home advantage in this one but they were outstanding and deserving winners as the dust settled on this meeting.  Tibor Nemecek and Josef Gavenda were virtually unbeatable as a pairing, although Poland pushed them close.  What seemed to be the key heat was when the pairs met each other in heat 11 - engine troubles saw Nemecek miss the 2 minute time limit and reserve Josef Gavenda came in to replace him.  The Polish pair of Boguslaw Kryznowek and Maciej Tercjak took advantage to streak away for a 5-1 which put them in control of the meeting.  The Czechs, cheered on by the majority of a huge crowd, were not to be denied and recovered with a 5-1 to go into the last round of heats just a point behind, with both nations having to face England, who were in the hunt for a rostrum finish themselves, in fact a couple of maximums and they could still have taken the title too.  The Czechs finished with a 4-2 win, ending England's hopes, but then had to wait to see if Poland could match them in heat 21 - they couldn't...quite!  What they did do was pull level at the top of the scoreboard to mean a run-off was required.  The format was that the pairs would meet with a 4-3-2-0 scoring system, meaning avoiding last place was all important.  Although Kryznowek got away in front the Czech pairing tucked in behind him to lift the title.  Yes the Czechs had home advantage here but make no mistake that they deserved this - nobody wins a major title without being a top rider and let's not forget it seems likely that the season will end with Tibor Nemecek as World Champion and Petr Marko has already won the Under 21 crown!

The rostrum was completed by the Danish pair of Kenni Algreen and Jens Isaksen who both turned in solid performances to earn their bronze medals.  For England Steve Edgar was excellent but Hayden Wood couldn't get going and they finished 2 points behind Denmark.  The rest were never really in the running although Boris Dvoynev of Russia and Rudi Juritzen of Norway showed the quality everyone knows they possess at the elite level.  Scotland finished bottom of the pack but in teenager Alex Golden they seem to have unearthed a star of the future and he impressed massively in his early rides here to send him into the GP Challenge with growing belief he can compete against the very best.
