SWEDISH GRAND PRIX

The Swedish Grand Prix was won by JACK HAGEN (TEESSIDE TRANSPORTERS), who finished the scoring with a 5 point gap from the rest of the field.  The young American had only shown flashes of his quality previously but this win now catapults him into the top 8 with just 1 round remaining and could prove a vital result for him.  SVEN SVENSSON (STOCKHOLM SCORPIONS) was another rider to improve his standing with a good round here, 2nd in Sweden means he jumps into the top 8 overall, not up to 7th.  FILLIPPE CHONG (WANTAGE KINGS) was third and closes the gap at the top of the leaderboard overall, but with just 1 round to race and 13 points to make up it seems he'll surely have to settle for 2nd this season?  The final rider in the Grand Final was GABRYS IRZYK (NEWMARKET RAIDERS) and his 13 points could prove very important as he goes into the final round down in 11th, but easily within striking distance of the top 8, just 4 points adrift.

NIKITA FEDERENKO (MOSCOW MOTHS) reached the Semis and has a similar story to Irzyk in that he didn't really improve his ranking but is now closer to the top 8 on points and has given himself a chance of avoiding the GP Challenge meeting.  TIBOR NEMECEK (KING'S LYNN LIGHTNING) started the meeting with a 17 point gap and could have sealed the title here but after an opening ride blank he rode a sensible meeting, given several other challengers were having a poor round, to keep himself well clear overall, now just needing 9 points from the last round to be certain of the title.  LIAM REAY (TILBURY DOCKERS) and HAYDEN WOOD (LANARKSHIRE LIONS) were the other Semi Finalists, the former will almost certainly go to the GP Challenge if he wants to keep his place in the series, the latter holds on to 6th on the leaderboard.

Several of the other leading riders failed to reach the Semis in this round but picked up points that at least saw them hold their positions overall.  KENNI ALGREEN (WANTAGE KINGS) remains 5th whilst MACIEJ TERCJAK (WOLSTON WARRIORS) and BORIS DVOYNEV (NEWMARKET RAIDERS) swap places into 3rd and 4th respectively, the trio and now separated by just 2 points as they go into the final round looking to clinch a rostrum place.  The most disappointed riders will be BOGUSLAW KRYZNOWEK (MILTON KEYNES CATS) and RICKY ANTUNOVICH (BOTTESFORD BULLETS) who scored 5 and 4 respectively and dropped out of the top 8 spots.  To stop Nemecek and Chong taking 1st and 2nd will need a minor miracle now but the battle down the field is a fascinating one: Tercjak, Dvoynev and Algreen can all take 3rd with a good final round, Hayden Wood is just 4 points behind them and from Wood, in 6th, down to Irzyk & Federenko in joint 11th the gap is just 8 points meaning the battle for an automatic, top 8, place in next year's series will go right down to the wire.  For the rest it looks like a trip to the GP Challenge is a certainty, although every rider will at least want to go into that meeting on a high.  The Wild Card pick for this round was Bulgaria's RUMUN DIMOTROV (ROME RAVENS) and he showed he can mix it with the best by picking up a solid 7 point total.
